Homemade mulled wine is a delicious warm cocktail, perfect for those cold evenings. Cinnamon, star anise, cloves and citrus are added to a bottle of red. A swig of brandy too, for good measure.
Daylight savings has ended and the nights are getting darker, faster. One of the best things about colder weather is being able to drink hot drinks, like homemade mulled wine, without your body temperature spiking (I’m lookin’ at you summer!)
One of the best cool weather drinks is mulled wine. It’s warming and comforting and great to share with friends at cozy evening get-togethers. It’s super easy to throw together, it’s all made in one pot!
First, spices, citrus and sugar are added to a little water and simmered to create a flavour packed syrup.
Then a bottle of red wine is added. It doesn’t matter too much what red wine you add, but it’s a good idea to choose a fruity kind. A cabernet sauvignon or a merlot are good choices.
Once the wine is added you don’t want to boil it (or you’ll boil off the alcohol). Keep it simmering for a while before adding in an optional slug of brandy.
Serve warm, in mugs or glasses with some orange slices.
Homemade Mulled Wine
- 1 orange peel and juice (strip off the peel with a peeler)
- 1 lemon (peel only) (strip off the peel with a peeler)
- 2 whole star anise
- 8 whole cloves
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1 bottle red wine
- 1/4 cup brandy (optional)
- In a large pot combine the water, sugar, orange peel and juice, lemon peel and spices. Bring to a boil and keep it boiling for about 6-8 minutes until reduced by half.Lower the heat.
- Add in the red wine. Bring to a simmer but don’t let it boil. Simmer for 10 minutes before adding in the brandy, then simmer for 5 minutes more.
- Strain mulled wine into a serving jug or serve straight from the pot and use a ladle. Pour into glasses and add some sliced orange for garnish.
