Homemade Mulled wine

Homemade Mulled Wine

Elien
A delicious warm cocktail, perfect for those cold evenings. Cinnamon, star anise, cloves and citrus are added to a bottle of red. A swig of brandy too, for good measure.

Ingredients

  • 1 orange peel and juice (strip off the peel with a peeler)
  • 1 lemon (peel only) (strip off the peel with a peeler)
  • 2 whole star anise
  • 8 whole cloves
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 bottle red wine
  • 1/4 cup brandy (optional)

Instructions

  • In a large pot combine the water, sugar, orange peel and juice, lemon peel and spices. Bring to a boil and keep it boiling for about 6-8 minutes until reduced by half.
    Lower the heat.
  • Add in the red wine. Bring to a simmer but don't let it boil. Simmer for 10 minutes before adding in the brandy, then simmer for 5 minutes more.
  • Strain mulled wine into a serving jug or serve straight from the pot and use a ladle.
Pour into glasses and add some sliced orange for garnish.
