Welcome to my blog! It’s been a year and a half now since I first started this journey I wanted to introduce myself properly and give you a little background on how Home Grown Happiness all started. So here goes, some snippets of real life…
I’m Elien, from Wellington, New Zealand where I live with my two little boys, Alek (7) and Lucas (6) and my husband, Che.
Originally I’m from Belgium but my family moved here when I was 6 years old and boy am I glad we did. New Zealand was and still is the most beautiful country I have ever seen and it’s ridiculously hard not be inspired by nature here.
I come from a nature-loving family. Every weekend we went on hikes around our area and our holidays were spent travelling the country and exploring NZ’s secret and most beautiful spots. I absolutely love Wellington city (the coolest little capital in the world) but it always felt extra good being out of the hustle and bustle and instead, deep in the middle of New Zealand untouched bush.
Being surrounded by all the flowers and fauna sparked an immense desire in me to live in such a way that embraced this, where I could live off the land and treat it with the care and respect it deserved and in turn, reap the rewards it would give back.
New Zealand property prices, put a bit of a damper on my dream of a giant lifestyle block and instead we are in the suburbs where sections are small and your neighbours are a stone’s throw away. I’m still extremely lucky to have a backyard that was my very own though and I was determined to make my dream a reality, albeit a smaller version.
My slice of homegrown happiness has changed drastically over the years as I tweaked and changed it to suit our growing needs.
I relish experimenting in the garden and all the trail and errors that come alongside. Over the last year we have been able to eat so much out of this little garden and have drastically reduced our food bill. As this is such a passion of mine, I thought it would be fun to start a blog and see if anyone was interested in reading. It has grown a lot over the last year and I’m stoked! This is my little piece of paradise and I love sharing it with you.
I hope this blog inspires you to grow your own produce and see that you don’t need a lifestyle block to feed your family. The freedom that growing my own produce has given me is amazing and it feels fantastic to know I’m reducing my carbon footprint as well as teaching my children where their food comes from.
Thank you for reading. ❤
