Growing Asparagus From Seed

Garden· Spring· Winter

Asparagus are a wonderful perennial to have in the garden. If they are treated correctly they’ll provide you for 20 years or more. Asparagus need a forever bed to be planted in and should not be harvested in their first three years. They need that time to establish themselves.  Growing asparagus from seed is a task well worth it. Asparagus…

Fragrant Vegetable Pho

Savoury

This is a vegetable packed soup with an aromatic and flavourful broth. A traditional Vietnamese pho broth is made with beef bones and spices. This vegetable pho doesn’t have beef but I promise you there is so much flavour.  We are on to the last month of winter! I’ve been warming up in the mornings with a hot spiced chai…

Winter in the Garden- August To Do List

Garden· Seasons in the garden· Spring· Winter

Buds on deciduous trees are swelling, there’s an abundance of citrus and spring bulbs are standing tall ready to show their faces (or in many cases, they already have!)  August is just so close to spring that you can practically smell it. What to sow this month from seed: broad beans, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, Chinese cabbages, onions, peas, rocket, lettuce,…

About me

Hey! I’m Elien from Wellington NZ.

I’m doing my best on a teeny section in the suburbs to provide my family with as much homegrown and homemade food as possible.

I’m a self confessed sourdough addict and I love ALL things cooking and baking. I would love to have you join me on my journey in my garden and kitchen.

Homemade Scented Candles // These were last year’s Christmas gifts and they were so much fun to make! You can tailor them to suit your own unique tastes and let your creativity run wild! They’re not hard to make either. 🕯
Link in my bio for my method. ☺️

My girls 🥰
Since the mornings got lighter they liked to wake us up with their songs of... uh joy? At 5:30am! Since then we got them this self service feeder and it’s amazing! I’m back to calling them my girls not ‘those chickens.’ 😜

Sourdough Puff Pastry // New Recipe
I’m excited about this one guys, albeit also a little done with pastry for the time being. There was a lot of recipe testing 😅. This sourdough puff pastry is not a rough puff, there’s a bit of work involved (though much less than croissants!) The end result is 💯 worth it though. Buttery, flakey and with that signature #sourdough tang. I’ve got my step by steps up on the blog with a link in my bio.
This pictured pastry shell is filled with Creme Patisserie, fresh strawberries and mint. The specific recipe for that will be on the blog later on this week. How cute is this dessert for Christmas Day though?
Happy baking friends!

What’s up doc? 🥕
There’s nothing like a garden grown carrot is there.😋 I’m thinning mine a bit more at the moment so I’ll hopefully get some even bigger ones soon.
Supermarket carrots are huge but I always find them watery and nothing in comparison.
The purple dragon carrots were sown in containers (see my story) and the orange were in a new no-dig bed, sown in September.
