The Method

The key to the best-frozen margaritas is a homemade margarita mix. And the best way to make it is with only a handful of ingredients.

Start by bringing water to a simmer, adding sugar and a pinch of salt for that sweet-salty balance. Once they dissolve, infuse the liquid with both fresh lime juice and a little freshly squeezed lemon juice alongside the peels. This method draws out the tangy citrus flavors.

Allow this mix to cool down and steep. This is essential to make sure that every inch of flavor from the fruit gets into the mix.

Mixing it up

Once you’ve got your homemade margarita mix ready, you’re set for a great cocktail experience in the comfort of your own home. For a classic frozen margarita, use a high-powered blender.

Combine 1 part tequila with 3 parts margarita mix with 3 parts ice to create the perfect slushy consistency. If you like your cocktails on the stronger side, you can add in a generous splash of orange liqueur like triple sec too.

To serve your masterpiece, take a lime wedge and run it along the rim of the glass, then dip it onto a small plate filled with salt. This salted rim offers a lovely contrast to the sweeter cocktail.

Variations

While the classic margarita is undoubtedly the star of this drink, why not play around a bit?

  • Strawberry Margarita: Add in fresh strawberries for a fruity flavor.
  • Mango Margarita: Mangoes can offer a delicious tropical twist.
  • Peach Margarita: Blend in some fresh peach slices for another fruity twist.
