About me

Hey! I’m Elien from Wellington NZ.

I’m doing my best on a teeny section in the suburbs to provide my family with as much homegrown and homemade food as possible.

I’m a self confessed sourdough addict and I love ALL things cooking and baking. I would love to have you join me on my journey in my garden and kitchen.

What’s up doc? 🥕
There’s nothing like a garden grown carrot is there.😋 I’m thinning mine a bit more at the moment so I’ll hopefully get some even bigger ones soon.
Supermarket carrots are huge but I always find them watery and nothing in comparison.
The purple dragon carrots were sown in containers (see my story) and the orange were in a new no-dig bed, sown in September.

Throw back to last summer. ☀️ My beans are starting to climb up my arches now so soon it will look like this again.
Do you know follow no-dig gardening practices? It's my absolute favourite way to garden. I've turned our entire section (front lawn included) into a no-dig food forest.
Continuously adding layers of organic matter and allowing spent plants to decompose in situ keeps my soil life active and healthy. No-dig gardening feeds the soil. I love that I can plant something literally anywhere in the garden as it's just one big bed.
The way I create my no-dig beds is through using as much self-sourced organic matter as I can. Home-made compost, worm castings, seaweed, newspaper, cardboard, you name it! It keeps costs and plastic use nice and low.
If you want to know more about how I set them up, check out the link in my bio.

I’ve been on a hunt today for bugs so I could take some 📷 and I interrupted this risqué scene. 😏
Green shield bugs are a right pain in the garden and damage fruits and veggies so these two did not stick around. I found so many more crawlies under leaves, on flowers, hanging off plant fibres...I’ve borrowed a teleconverter for my camera so it’s way more interesting taking up close photos.

Strawberry Salad with Roasted Strawberry Dressing // New Recipe 🍓
Who’s ready for summer? 🙋🏻‍♀️ it’s so hot out already, so I’m all for simple meals we can eat outside. 🥗
This strawberry salad is SO good and so simple. It’s got fresh herbs, crisp lettuce, sweet strawberries, feta, walnuts and red onion. And it’s the roasted strawberry dressing brings it all together. 🍓
Link to the recipe is in my bio.
